Sept. 2016 Rogue of the Month!

Matt Shorkey

Give us a little background on who you are and what you do for a living…

I am originally from Long Beach, California. I have been in the Rogue Valley for over 4 years now. I love Southern Oregon. If I am not working, I am out enjoying all the great things we have to do here. Snowboarding, hiking, rafting, golfing, or finding a new road to take my Harley on a ride. I drive semi trucks for Fedex Freight. I’ve been doing that going on 6 years now and it is also what brought me to the valley.

How long have you been CrossFitting ? How did you hear about RVCF ?

I started CrossFit at the beginning of 2016. I was always intrigued by the core fundamentals of CrossFit so I just did a Google search and went to the first place I found.

What training did you do before CrossFit ?

I tried a bunch of the fad DVD workouts before making the choice to do something that really works! I never could stick with the same old workout day in and day out. One of the best parts of CrossFit is the variation in workouts.

How has CrossFit impacted your life ?

It has been a huge positive influence and has made me realize I am capable of things I would have never thought possible. Being able to push through a hard WOD and reaching a goal you set is a big confidence booster! The energy boost I get from a solid workout also has helped me get through the long nights of driving out on the road for my job.

What has been your most memorable experience at the gym?

As cheesy as it sounds, every day I have show up has been memorable. Suffering through a WOD with the awesome people at RVCF has been such an amazing experience each and every day. Shout outs to the 6:15’ers!!

What’s your favorite WOD or exercise?

Seeing as how I am like a monkey, anything involving pullups is my go to. I really enjoy doing anything involving running as well. As far as specific WOD’s, I would say Helen has been my favorite so far.

Do you have any advice for new CrossFit members ?

If you are thinking about getting into CrossFit, stop thinking about it and do it! I promise, you will not regret it. Put your apprehensions aside and just go for it. It will be the best decision you will make, I know it has been for me! For anyone that has just started, much like myself, don’t give up. Some days will be harder than the next but if you keep showing up you will get better!
